'Deep Space Nine' was not only the second spin-off of the original Star Trek series, but even more so a spin-off of 'The Next Generation', as it was set in the same era and featured TNG characters such as Miles O'Brien and Worf. But the show's tone was very different to its predecessors, as Captain Sisko held the command over a space station and not a starship. Viewers still embraced this new format, and through most of the show's run it was the most popular show in syndication.
