Title: Star Trek: Starfleet Corps of Engineers #44, Where Time Stands Still
Authors: Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore
Release Date: October 2004
Format: eBook
ISBN: 0-7434-9361-3

Fans of Star Trek the animated series will be absolutely delighted with Where Time Stands Still, the 44th Starfleet Corps of Engineers eBook. Penned by regular S.C.E. contributors Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, Where Time Stands Still is a follow up to both the animated series episode "The Time Trap" and the authors' S.C.E. novel Foundations. A lively and highly entertaining tale that engages from beginning to end, Where Time Stands Still is one incredibly clever and amusing read.

In their S.C.E. novel Foundations, Ward and Dilmore traced the origins of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers through flashbacks that featured the twenty-third century S.C.E. vessel the U.S.S. Lovell. In Where Time Stands Still, they again utilize the Lovell's crew to tell the tale of what happens after the events of the animated episode "The Time Trap" when the USS Enterprise and the Klingon cruiser Klothos barely succeeded in escaping the mysterious Delta Triangle region of space. In the wake of that incident, Lieutenant Commander Mahmud al-Khaled and the crew of the Lovell are tasked with finding a way to "open" the Triangle and rescue a lost generation ship that was last seen entering the phenomenon. The Lovell's task becomes even more dangerous and complex when the Gorn arrive claiming that Gorn criminals are among the inhabitants of the Triangle and demanding their return.

As regular contributors to this original series since its inception, Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore over the course of eight stories (nine if you include their S.C.E. short story in Tales of the Dominion War), have been a major factor in both the series' development and ever-growing popularity. They consistently devise ingenious new ways to combine their life long appreciation for all things trek with unique and audacious plot ideas that just keep enhancing and expanding this series. Where Time Stands Still is a perfect example of that creativity.

There is a lot going on in the narrative of Where Time Stands Still, more than one dilemma facing the Lovell's crew, but the authors never lose track of the various strands and the resolution is extremely satisfying. Along the way Ward and Dilmore manage to touch on multiple corners of the Star Trek universe while creating wonderful characters that you find yourself hoping you will have the opportunity to meet again.

A previous familiarity with S.C.E. or "The Time Trap" certainly enhances the enjoyment of reading Where Time Stands Still but is not necessary. Where Time Stands Still stands on its own as a delightfully fun read.
